Userlist alternatives for SaaS lifecycle teams
If you are comparing Userlist alternatives because Basic starts at $149 a month for 10,000 users, the closest purpose-built option is Loops: the Growing Audience plan is $99 a month at about 10,000 subscribers with unlimited sends and transactional email included, and the free plan covers up to 4,000 sends in any rolling 30 days to your 1,000 newest contacts. If the $149 floor is the issue and you do not need account-level modelling, MailerLite Comfort is $12 a month at 500 subscribers ($10.80 billed annually) with a free plan (250 subscribers, 2,500 emails a month) to rehearse on. Userlist is still the right choice when your marketing question is “who has reached this product state?” rather than “who is on this list?” — its account-and-user model, in-app messages, and segments for both are designed for SaaS, and the alternatives below each trade one of those for a lower entry price or a simpler data model.
Prices were read from each vendor’s pricing page on October 7, 2026. Userlist’s own numbers: Basic is $149 a month at up to 10,000 users ($10 per additional 1,000 users) with marketing and lifecycle email, in-app messages, and segments for users and companies. The $349 Professional tier covers 10,000 users ($12 per additional 1,000) and adds A/B split testing, conversion goals, and advanced workflow features. Enterprise is custom-priced. Every plan includes a monthly message allowance of 5× your tracked user count with a minimum floor of 500,000 messages; overage is $1 per 1,000 additional messages. There is no free plan.
What people leave Userlist over
The $149-a-month entry price
Userlist’s Basic plan is $149 a month at 10,000 users. There is no cheaper tier and no free plan. A SaaS with 2,000 users paying $149 a month for lifecycle email is paying more than many early-stage products earn. Loops has a free plan and a $48-a-month tier at about 5,000 subscribers; MailerLite Comfort is $12 a month at 500 subscribers. If the reason for leaving Userlist is the price floor, the alternatives are not just cheaper — they are cheaper by an order of magnitude at small scale.
The message allowance ceiling
Every Userlist plan includes a monthly message allowance equal to 5× your tracked user count, with a minimum floor of 500,000 messages. At 10,000 users that is 50,000 messages — not 500,000 (the floor applies to plans under 100,000 users). A SaaS with 10,000 users that sends a weekly newsletter (10,000 × 4.3 = 43,000 messages) plus lifecycle emails can hit the ceiling. Overage is $1 per 1,000 additional messages, so 20,000 extra messages costs $20. Not fatal, but it is a variable cost on top of a fixed one.
Professional features cost $349
A/B split testing, conversion goals and advanced workflow features sit on Professional at $349 a month at 10,000 users — $200 more than Basic. If your programme depends on A/B testing subject lines or measuring conversion goals in the automation, you are on Professional from day one. Loops includes all features on every plan (including free); MailerLite includes A/B testing on Comfort ($12 a month). The question is whether Userlist’s SaaS-specific features justify the premium over the alternatives’ general-purpose ones.
Where Userlist is still the better choice
Stay if account-level modelling is the reason you chose it. Userlist segments by users and companies natively, supports in-app messages alongside email, and its billing doc confirms the 5× message allowance with a 500,000 floor and $1-per-1,000 overage rate — predictable if you know your user count. For B2B SaaS where the account is the customer and the user is the product user, Userlist’s data model is the product, not a feature. If that is your situation, the alternatives below may save money and cost you the concept you bought Userlist for.

The alternatives, one by one
Loops — SaaS lifecycle with a free runway
Loops is the nearest fit in philosophy and the cheaper one in practice. Its Early Stage tier permits 4,000 sends in a rolling 30-day window to the 1,000 newest contacts, with every feature included and a small “Powered by Loops” footer. The Growing Audience plan is $48 a month at about 5,000 subscribers and $99 at about 10,000 — Userlist’s $149 at 10,000 users. Transactional email is included at no additional charge on paid plans and there is no per-seat charge. The gap: Loops does not model accounts and users as separate entities. If your onboarding needs to trigger a message to the account owner when a team member completes a step, Loops will not do that natively. Prices: loops.so/pricing.
Customer.io — event-driven orchestration with objects
Customer.io is the upgrade when Userlist’s model is right but the workflow depth is not enough. Essentials is $100 a month for 5,000 profiles with 1 million emails included; the selector shows $145 at 10,000 and $235 at 20,000. It supports object-based triggers (“object updated”), multi-channel sends (email, push, in-app, WhatsApp) from one workflow builder, and transactional email is included in every plan. The trade-offs: profiles and objects share one billing count, bounced and suppressed emails count toward billing, and new accounts face a daily sending ramp. At 10,000 profiles, Customer.io Essentials ($145) is about the same as Userlist Basic ($149) — the difference is features, not price. Prices: customer.io/pricing.
MailerLite — a small SaaS that does not need account modelling yet
If you are pre-product-market-fit and paying Userlist $149 a month for 2,000 users, MailerLite’s Comfort plan at $12 a month (500 subscribers, monthly billing; $10.80 billed annually) is the pragmatic pause. The free plan covers 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month with 2 user seats — enough to run the whole programme for free until the product justifies a paid tool. Where it falls short: no account model, no in-app messages, no event-driven triggers with properties. If your Userlist flows fire on product events, you will lose that. But if the flow is “welcome series plus monthly newsletter,” MailerLite does the job at 8% of the price. Prices: mailerlite.com/pricing.
Brevo — one bill for campaigns and transactional
Brevo is worth a look when the SaaS also sends transactional email (receipts, password resets, usage alerts) and wants one bill for both. Free is 300 emails a day with storage for up to 100,000 contacts; Starter is $9 a month from 5,000 emails; Standard is $18 a month and adds marketing automation, A/B testing and advanced reports. It is priced by emails sent rather than by users, so a product with 10,000 users that mails rarely can be cheaper here than on Userlist. The trade-off: Brevo has no account model and no in-app messaging. Prices: brevo.com/pricing.
ActiveCampaign — automation depth and CRM follow-up
ActiveCampaign is the alternative when the SaaS has a sales team and the lifecycle includes lead scoring, deal stages, and CRM handoff. Starter is $15 a month at 1,000 contacts billed annually ($180 a year) with 5 actions per automation; Plus is $49 a month at 1,000 contacts with unlimited actions, lead scoring and CRM Pipelines. The catch: ActiveCampaign prices by contacts and counts every contact toward the limit on accounts created on or after November 3, 2025, including unsubscribed and bounced ones. A Userlist account with 10,000 users would be 10,000 contacts on ActiveCampaign — and at that band the Plus plan is considerably more than $15. Price your real contact count before treating the entry price as the answer. Prices: activecampaign.com/pricing.
Kit — when the “SaaS” is really a creator product
If the company is a creator product or a newsletter business with a small SaaS attached, Kit’s free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited landing pages, forms and email broadcasts, tagging and segmentation. Creator is $33 a month at 1,000 subscribers billed yearly and unlocks Visual Automations and sequences; Pro is $66 a month on the same billing. The gap: Kit has no account model and no product-event triggers. It is for audience relationships, not product lifecycle. But if you are leaving Userlist because the price is too high and your real need is broadcasting to an audience, Kit is free at a size where Userlist is $149 a month. Prices: kit.com/pricing.
How to choose
- Count your tracked users and monthly messages. Userlist includes 5× your user count in messages (500,000 floor) with $1-per-1,000 overage. A 10,000-user SaaS sending 43,000 messages a month fits; sending 80,000 does not. Model the overage before deciding Userlist is flat-rate.
- Decide whether the account model is a requirement or a nice-to-have. If your product has accounts with multiple users and your messaging depends on account state (plan, seat count, usage threshold), Userlist or Customer.io. If your messaging is user-centric (onboarding, activation, churn), Loops or MailerLite.
- Check whether in-app messages are part of the programme. Userlist includes them on every plan. Loops, MailerLite, Brevo and Kit do not list in-app messaging on their standard pricing pages. If in-app is a channel you use, it may not travel with you.
- Price your real size on both tools. Userlist Basic at 10,000 users is $149 a month; Loops at 10,000 subscribers is $99; Customer.io at 10,000 profiles is $145. The gap is small at 10,000 and large at 1,000 (Userlist is still $149; Loops is free or $48; MailerLite is $12).
- Budget the rebuild: user and account properties, event schemas, workflow logic, and in-app message designs do not export as working copies. Two to four days of rebuilding is part of the price of switching.
Moving off Userlist without losing user data
Userlist’s strength is its data model: users, accounts, and the relationships between them. Most alternatives have a flatter model, so the migration is not just an export — it is a translation. Export users and accounts with all custom properties first, then map the account-user relationships into whatever the new tool supports (tags, custom fields, or separate lists). Workflow logic does not export from Userlist; write it down before you leave.
- Export users with all custom properties, signup source, consent status, and their account memberships. Userlist’s CSV export includes user attributes; keep the original consent records and form submissions as well.
- Export accounts separately with their properties (plan, seat count, MRR, or whatever you track). Record which users belong to which account — most tools have no equivalent concept and you will encode it as a custom field or tag.
- Document every workflow: trigger event or condition, email steps, in-app messages, wait times, branch logic, and exit rules. Userlist does not export automation logic as a portable file.
- Check the message allowance. Userlist includes 5× your tracked user count in messages (500,000 floor) with $1-per-1,000 overage. If you move to a tool with unlimited sends (Loops paid, MailerLite Power), the overage disappears; if you move to one with a send cap (MailerLite Comfort), the overage may be worse.
- Import into the new tool, apply suppression (unsubscribed and bounced contacts from Userlist must stay suppressed), rebuild one low-risk workflow first, and send to a small segment before moving the rest.
FAQ
Does Userlist have a free plan?
No. The pricing page lists Basic at $149 a month at 10,000 users, Professional at $349 a month, and Enterprise as custom. There is no free tier and no self-serve trial listed. If a free plan is the requirement, Loops (4,000 sends a month to 1,000 newest contacts), MailerLite (250 subscribers, 2,500 emails a month) and Kit (10,000 subscribers for broadcasts) all publish one.
What does Userlist cost at 10,000 users?
Basic is $149 a month at up to 10,000 users with $10 per additional 1,000 users. Professional is $349 a month at 10,000 users with $12 per additional 1,000. Every plan includes a message allowance of 5× your tracked user count (500,000-message floor); overage is $1 per 1,000 messages. At 18,000 users, Basic is $229 a month; at 32,000 it is $369 a month.
Is Loops or Userlist better for SaaS lifecycle email?
Loops is cheaper (free plan, $99 a month at 10,000 subscribers against Userlist’s $149) and includes all features on every plan. Userlist has account-level modelling, in-app messages, and user-plus-company segmentation that Loops does not. If your messaging depends on account state (plan changes, seat counts, usage thresholds), Userlist is the better tool. If it depends on user events (activation, feature use, inactivity), Loops does the job for less.
What is the Userlist message allowance?
Every plan includes a monthly message allowance equal to 5× your tracked user count, with a minimum floor of 500,000 messages per billing period. At 10,000 users that is 50,000 messages (the 500,000 floor only applies to plans with very high user counts). Overage is $1 per 1,000 additional messages. A weekly newsletter to 10,000 users uses about 43,000 messages a month and fits; adding a daily product update does not.
Can I switch from Userlist to a cheaper tool without losing account modelling?
Only partially. Customer.io has an object model that groups people into accounts and supports object-based triggers; at 10,000 profiles it is $145 a month, about the same as Userlist Basic. Loops and MailerLite do not model accounts — you would encode account membership as a custom field or tag and lose the native relationship. If account modelling is why you chose Userlist, test Customer.io before choosing a cheaper general-purpose tool.
